A family picnic at the Amathus Ruins: History, hills, and happiness

The Amathus Ruins have quickly climbed to the top of our list of favorite spots in Cyprus. There’s something about this place that feels like stepping into a storybook, with its ancient stones and panoramic views of the sea. It was our family’s second visit, and it felt just as special, if not more, with new discoveries waiting at every turn.

This time around, we decided to keep our picnic simple: tuna mayo sandwiches and a selection of fresh fruit. Our little sous-chef, our daughter, was eager to help, taking charge of the tuna cans and bread. Watching her meticulously prepare the sandwiches, from mixing the tuna and mayo to buttering the bread, was a delightful start to our adventure.

Once we arrived at the ruins, the kids were immediately drawn to the hills, running up and down with the kind of energy only kids seem to have. We found the perfect spot for our lunch on top of a hill, where the view of the waves crashing against the shore was nothing short of breathtaking.

Our family's rendition of “The floor is lava” on the ancient stones was a highlight, bringing giggles and excitement. We even stumbled upon some new wildlife, spotting curious bugs and unique foliage 🌵, which fascinated the kids.

Though our two-year-old son had a minor tumble, he was quick to get back up, unfazed, a little adventurer in the making 🙏. Meanwhile, our 11-month-old was on a mission to explore everything in sight, ensuring he didn't miss out on the picnic snacks—a bit of snatching may have been involved 😂. It seems the "third child syndrome" is real, and our youngest is a textbook case.

After a day filled with exploration, laughter, and running around, we headed home for some well-deserved naps. As I sit down to enjoy a cup of tea (at my daughter's request) and a carob biscuit, I can't help but feel thankful for these simple yet magical family moments.

The Amathus Ruins, with their easy parking, proximity to the beach for those impromptu swims, and endless opportunities for discovery, have cemented themselves as a family favorite. It's a place where history meets playtime, where every visit holds something new to uncover. As we plan our return, I'm reminded of the joy in these shared adventures, the beauty of Cyprus, and the laughter of my children echoing among ancient stones. Here's to many more picnics, games, and discoveries at the Amathus Ruins.
