Enjoying Carnival in Cyprus with kids
Let's dive into the vibrant world of Carnival in Cyprus, a delightful pre-Lenten celebration that brings families and communities together in a spectacular fashion. As an English mum of three residing in Limassol, Cyprus, I've come to appreciate the unique charm and joy that this festive season brings to both locals and expats alike.
Carnival in Cyprus is an all-encompassing event that welcomes everyone, especially families, into its lively embrace. Whether you're seeking the bustling atmosphere of a big city or the warm, community-oriented festivities of smaller towns and villages, Cyprus has it all. Nicosia, the capital, offers grand celebrations, but don't overlook the allure of smaller locales. Larnaca, Paphos, and Ayia Napa, for example, host enchanting Carnival events that are well worth exploring.
Imagine streets filled with colorful parades, music filling the air, and people adorned in the most imaginative costumes imaginable. It's a scene reminiscent of my days attending the Notting Hill Carnival in London during my twenties. Fast forward to the present, and here we are, gearing up to celebrate Carnival in Cyprus with our three children.
This year, we're particularly excited to introduce our daughter to the masquerade. Her love for dress-up will come alive as she witnesses the array of costumes ranging from regal kings to mischievous tricksters. Supporting our expat friends in the Limassol parade, we've planned a family outing for Sunday, navigating the festivities with our young ones in tow, ages 5, 2, and 1.
Given the logistics of moving through Limassol with a stroller, we've decided on babywearing for our youngest and strategic positioning for our other children to ensure everyone has a view and stays safe. We're even considering using an AirTag for added peace of mind in the bustling crowds.
Our adventure begins at the Ayios Nikolaos Roundabout, with hopes of reaching the Polemidia Traffic Lights (Fairways). Though ambitious, our goal is to soak in as much of the Carnival spirit as our little ones can handle before their energy wanes.
An exciting addition to our weekend plans includes a visit to the Hellenic Bank for the Municipality's children's train tour, a perfect activity for our train-obsessed two-year-old. The toughest challenge? Resisting the tempting array of sweets and treats, a task made easier by packing healthy snacks to keep their energy levels balanced.
The Carnival is not just about the parades; it's a sensory feast for the little ones, with floats designed to dazzle their imaginations. It's a celebration that caters to all ages, making it a perfect family outing.
For those with children four years and older, the Paradox Museum in Limassol offers a combo ticket for a Carnival Fiesta that includes:
Child (4 to 11 years old): €20
General Admission (12+ years old): €23
Family 4-pack: €80 (Includes 4 people, either 2 x General Admission and 2 x Children or 1 x General Admission and 3 x Children)
This package promises a magical 3-hour journey through creativity-sparking workshops and mind-bending STEM games. It's an experience designed to delight and challenge, making it a highlight of our Carnival celebrations.
Carnival in Cyprus is about embracing the culture, enjoying quality family time, and creating unforgettable memories. If you're in Limassol, let's meet and share in the joy of this festive season!
See you there!
